Well, I've been a vegetarian since I was about, 9. At the time, I just didn't like the taste of meat, so I didn't eat it.
As I grew older, I almost wanted to eat meat (this just happened probably twice in my life) but then I rejected it because I love animals.
But it was getting harder for me to eat food only because in my late teens I had NO apetite due from surgery. And by then, my mom would cook for me (because i didn't feel good, mentally enough to cook for myself) and she wouldn't cook much. A dish of beans for dinner, cereal in the mornings.
Finally years later I regained my apetite...but still I don't have much to eat around here. I mean, there's lots of foods to cook but, I still won't cook for myself. =/
At one point I was a vegan for half a year and it was hard (only because almost every food had dairy in it).

Wel, I'm not vegan or vegatarian but I just ate grilled chicken and felt sick and still feel sick from the smell of it. I have wanted to go vegatarian for some time but have not known how to make the meals interesting. Any suggestions would be wlecome. I also felt guilty eating chicken while my parrot, Sunny, sat in the next room. Yeah, I know he's not a chicken but he's still from the bird family and if I don't need to eat meat then I would rather not.

Oh, yes, you asked what prompted each one of us to become vegetarian. I left the answer to that one out.... Well, I was living deep in the South at the time, with a woman from the Deep South. Local people ate meat products for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks too. How my ex GF remained trim I have no idea but that's not the point. I do wonder, though.
So the carnivourous diet was everywhere, so ridiculously overdone that it quietly but deeply upset me. I didn't realise @ first what about it unsettled me to such a degree. I rationalised that I was worried Re the health-implications of my patients' heavy reliance on saturated-fatty food, and it is true that the regional heart-disease and obesity stats stunned and continue to sadden me: Tthe stats were and remain horrifying.

But that wasn't it. I knew; it intuitively did not explain my growing, non-preachy revulsion from this type of diet. I was walking my dog one day (actually, really, the fellow walked me--so energetic; I miss ol' Tommy) and it hit me; it hit me very hard: Here I was, walking with a friend who gives me unconditional love, but, unlike his wild cousins, I ate meat for no reason at all. I was not "monitoring" the deer-herds and keeping the ecology of the region health. I'm a human, not a wolf: Humans can shop for food, and if they'd stop murdering the large predators, our ecological balance would be restored. Also,eating cows and such had nothing to do with ecology anyhow. All it took was a bit of reading on the meat "food" industry and I was done with that diet, y'all. Done done done.

This, like I wrote below, was only a year ago, but my switchover was so powerfully driven and being a vegetarian has become so much a part of my daily routine, identity and ability to sleep @ night that I do not fear a relapse.

I'm a vegetarian and I like it. Although I've only lived this lifestyle (& it is a lifestyle, not just a menu-preference) for 1 year, I'm sold. What was was, but I haven't the slightest idea how come I didn't make this "conversion" earlier. At any rate, I've got the enthusiasm of a newbie!

those of us who already eat a plant based diet have the blessing given by such, so many do not...

If u've not yet seen this, please watch it, it is the best I've seen of its kind.... Share it with those who think its ok to kill so they may eat...

may all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness
may they be free from suffering and the cause of suffering

Hi, I'd like to find out how easy it was to become vegetarian or vegan. I always get guidance to go vegetarian or vegan but, I have had a hard time not wanting to eat the same things that I'm used to. I sent for the Vegetarian starter kit last week and I'm looking forward to getting it.
I'd love to hear how people made the change? Was it easy or did you have to work on it slowly?
